If you don't feel like feeling like you're buying liquor during Prohibition, you might choose to go to Chevy Chase Liquor Store instead of Auburn Avenue. It's still run by Montgomery County, BUT... It's on a main street (Wisonsin Ave); it's in a shopping complex (with Trader Joe's, no less); it's got a lively parking lot full of well-heeled, well-wheeled shoppers; and it's got windows that actually let in a little daylight.
Mind the well-marked sale items and you can actually save a bit of money (assuming you're not buying liters you wouldn't be otherwise).
